The “21st Century Skills at Our Fingertips” project, organized at Malazgirt Middle School where our department research assistant Dr. Habibe GÜNEŞ took part as an expert, was realized with artificial intelligence, computational thinking and coding activities for visually impaired students. The opening of the project was initiated with the participation of Şahinbey District National Education Director Eyüp Güneş.
Project manager Büşra Demir emphasized the goals and importance of the project in her opening speech: “Our aim is to ensure that visually impaired individuals are not only technology users but also producers. We encourage solidarity, equality and inclusiveness in this process.”
On the first day of the project, first of all, Fırat University BOTE Department PhD graduate and Gaziantep Islamic Science and Technology University Expert Dr. Yusuf Kalınkara guided the students with his presentation titled “Computational Thinking, Artificial Intelligence and Coding”. In the afternoon session of the same day, our department research assistant Expert Dr. Habibe Güneş conveyed the first steps of coding with Cubetto to visually impaired students with the support of Braille labels and voice instructions and carried out the workshop. On the second day, algorithm creation activities were carried out with Hacettepe University PhD Candidate Hale UÇUŞ, the founder of the Barrier-Free Mathematics Platform ENMEP and also awarded by the Sabancı Foundation this year. On the third day, the From Your Eyes application founder Zülal Tannur, who won the first place in Teknofest and the Microsoft Imagine Cup World Champion, carried out the From Your Eyes with Fundamentals of Data Science and Machine Learning and Introduction to Image Processing Technology event. On the last day, the “Barrier-Free Software Learning: Let's Say Hello to Python” event was carried out by web developer Bora FIRLANGEÇ. This project, which set out with the aim of empowering the most fragile individuals in society, aims to strengthen the connection of visually impaired individuals with technology and to raise them as productive individuals of the future.
